Barrier performance plays an important role in maintaining freshness and protecting dry food, coffee, pet food, powder products and other retail goods. VMPET metallized structures and aluminum foil structures are two common barrier solutions in flexible packaging.
Many buyers are unsure which structure is suitable. Choosing aluminum foil for ordinary short-shelf-life products may increase cost unnecessarily, while choosing VMPET for long-shelf-life products may provide insufficient barrier protection.
Basic Material Characteristics
VMPET Metallized Film
VMPET is made by adding a thin metallized layer onto PET film through vacuum metallization. It has a bright silver appearance and provides moderate oxygen and moisture barrier performance. It is widely used in cost-effective retail packaging.
Aluminum Foil Composite Structure
Aluminum foil is a real metal foil layer. It usually provides stronger light shielding, oxygen barrier and moisture resistance than VMPET. It is often selected for products requiring stronger protection and longer shelf-life support.
VMPET vs Aluminum Foil Comparison
| Comparison Dimension | VMPET Composite Bag | Aluminum Foil Composite Bag |
|---|---|---|
| Barrier performance | Moderate oxygen and moisture barrier | Stronger comprehensive barrier performance |
| Light shielding | Partial light shielding | Excellent light shielding |
| Production cost | More economical for many mass orders | Higher material and production cost |
| Appearance | Bright metallic luster | Thicker matte metallic texture |
| Flexibility | Good flexibility | Slightly stiffer texture |
| Suitable shelf life | Medium or short-term storage | Longer sealed storage requirements |
Suitable Application Scenarios
When to Choose VMPET
VMPET structures are suitable for ordinary snacks, some pet food packaging, daily chemical powder products and medium-shelf-life granular products. It balances appearance, basic barrier performance and cost.
When to Choose Aluminum Foil
Aluminum foil structures are suitable for premium coffee, high-value snacks, nutritional powder, easily oxidized dry goods and products requiring stronger light and oxygen protection.
How to Choose Reasonably
Buyers should confirm three points before selecting the structure: expected shelf life, product sensitivity to oxygen or light, and budget range. For conventional products with moderate shelf-life needs, VMPET may be enough. For products requiring longer storage or stronger protection, aluminum foil is often more suitable.
The final structure should also consider storage environment, transportation distance and destination market requirements.
